“Digital manufacturing transformation is easy.”

(said no systems engineer ever)

Truth is, modern manufacturing demands the real-time movement of events and other data across every environment and component of the digital enterprise. But integrating IT and OT across plants, datacenters, clouds and geographies is no small feat. PubSub+ is an advanced event broker platform that helps you manage it all.

Move real-time data between devices, buildings, assembly lines, fleets, containers and more

Hybrid Cloud

Enable event-driven communications across hybrid and multi-cloud architectures

Ensure 100% reliability and consistently high performance and security across OT and IT

Elastically scale your IoT operations to manage millions and even billions of connections

Here’s what digital manufacturing can look like when it’s powered by PubSub+

Like that diagram? Great. Here’s how PubSub+ works in sentences. We hope you’ll like these, too.

  • PubSub+ advanced event brokers sit between applications, microservices, devices and IoT gateways to enable fast, reliable, secure, and scalable communication via the publish-subscribe, queuing, streaming or request-reply messaging patterns.
  • The event brokers can be deployed natively in any and all of your environments — on premises and in public and private clouds. And they can be connected to form an “event mesh” (more below) that enables event-driven communication across hybrid and multi-cloud architectures.
  • For large-scale global manufacturers with multiple iPaaS, IoT platform and ESB and messaging technologies, PubSub+ plays the “integrator of integrators” role, sliding easily under these technologies to provide a uniform, event-driven and industrial-strength messaging layer.

To recap, all of that means PubSub+ allows your team to move from

to

Integrating IT and OT

across hybrid and multi-cloud architectures, with an event broker that natively supports a variety of open standard protocols and APIs (MQTT, JMS, AMQP, HTTP/REST, WebSocket). Plus it integrates easily with IoT gateways and can be deployed in and connected across on-premises, public cloud and private cloud environments.

Streaming events

and other data in real-time, from edge devices and apps, to core systems and cloud services, for both real-time analytics and data-at-rest analytics.

Command and control

edge devices and in-plant apps and systems in real-time, enabling back-end systems to send commands to a single edge device or application to a group of end-points or to select end-points in various locations.

Track and trace

across global supply chains and distribute transportation and logistics data to back-end systems for analysis and real-time supply chain optimization.

Elastically scale your system

to manage millions and even billions of connections and huge workloads at peak periods of demand, while scaling back capacity when demand is reduced.

Ensure 100% reliability and world-class security

across OT and IT, with capabilities that include high availability, low latency, disaster recovery, guaranteed delivery, buffering, WAN optimization, burst handling, and end-to-end security (authentication, authorization and encryption).

Let’s take this down a level. Building a hybrid IoT event mesh with PubSub+ is all kinds of cool.

Building a hybrid IoT event mesh with PubSub+ - video

PubSub+ enables the creation of event mesh, a foundational layer of technology that makes sure that as events and other data are produced in your organization (as things happen), they are routed from the devices and applications that produced them, to all the other processes, devices and applications that need to know about them.

Event mesh can be created by deploying Solace PubSub+ event brokers in all your environments (PubSub+ is available as an appliance, software and as a service), and connecting them to create a network of event brokers that spans your enterprise IoT ecosystem.

Consider a typical IIoT ecosystem, where you have:

  • Connected “things” like vehicles, warehouses, factories, machines, edge gateways;
  • IoT frameworks and protocols like Eclipse and Edge X and OPC-UA;
  • Management infrastructure for security and access management, identity and entitlements, device shadowing, asset monitoring and management;
  • Data infrastructure for reference data, time series data, streaming analytics, machine learning, data services and packaging, location services;
  • API tooling for integration, API management, streaming APIs; and,
    Business applications for maintenance, optimization, ERP, SCM, MES.

Modern deployment typologies are such that you will want to enable these functions/applications within and across the different layers of your IoT architecture: at the local edge, regional edge, application platform, and ecosystem edge. But you can face a number of challenges as you try to extend this functionality horizontally and vertically:

Horizontally

  • Concurrent device connection counts
  • Latency and volume of messages/events
  • Aggregation of connections and message volume
  • Global routing
  • Fine-grained access control for events and other data

Vertically

  • Application connectivity (variety of APIs and protocols)
  • Application integration (variety of data and event integration patterns)
  • Deployment and management (container, automation, monitoring)
  • Hybrid cloud (public, private, legacy)
  • Agility and flexibility (data and event distribution and routing)
